The song that never ends

I was just finishing up mowing the lawn when I spotted the ice cream truck a block or two up the street. There was a time when that would have sent me scurrying into the house. It was either make that dash or have “Pop Goes the Weasel” in my head all night long.
But thanks to one of my students, I now know the antidote.
It was a few years ago when that student told me the way to knock a pesky tune out of your head is to hum the “I Dream of Jeannie” theme song.
You know:
Dooo do
Do do, do do do
Dooo do
Do do, do do do
Dooo do
Do do, do do do
Do

Kinda loses something in print, but you get the idea.
The student said that while the “I Dream of Jeannie” theme song will get rid of any song planted in your brain, it itself will not stay.
Does it work?
It does for me.
So much so that I’ve actually downloaded it from Youtube to my smart phone.
You just never know when you might stumble upon “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” on an oldies radio station. Or while flipping through TV channels run into Shari Lewis’ Lamb Chop singing “The Song that Never Ends.”
My kids used to sing that one in the car just to annoy me.
That was long before I knew about the “I Dream of Jeannie” cure.
One thing I must say about that old Lamb Chop song, it was aptly named.
