Can a St. Louis Cardinals fan be happy if the Chicago Cubs win the World Series?
This one can.
Blasphemy, I know. But how can any baseball fan not be rooting for this year’s Cubs at least a little bit?
Their last championship being 1908, the prediction in Back to the Future II, and their manager hailing from Hazleton aside, the Cubs are simply fun to watch. They’ve lost the losers tag but hung on to the lovable.
Sure, I’ll be pulling for the Cards. They’ve been my team since I was 11 years old (I’ll spare you the math, that’s 54 years). But a Cubs title won’t break my heart.
And that’s not all.
I wouldn’t hate a Pirates world championship either.
Am I mellowing with age?
I don’t know. But as the baseball post season begins I can think of several outcomes I can live with, another Redbirds championship notwithstanding.
I have a lot of friends who are Pirates fans including a brother-in-law, nephew and former student now living in Pittsburgh. I’d like to see them happy.
Then there’s the Roberto Clemente thing. I love legendary Cardinals Stan Musial, Bob Gibson and Lou Brock, but Clemente might be my favorite player ever. A Pittsburgh win would honor his memory.
But I could dig a Mets championship too.
My daughter roots for the Mets. So does another former student who grew up in New York and is back living there. We texted back and forth all summer about those pesky Metropolitans (does anybody even know that’s their real name?)
So, yes, the Mets too can win it all as far as I’m concerned.
So could the Royals, however, which pains me to say. 1985 is not as long ago as it seems. But one of my best friends from high school is a Kansas City fan. His joy would be my joy.
As I am writing this Tuesday night, the Houston Astros are leading the Yankees 2-0 in the 6th. The game is on in the background. The Astros are a Cinderella story, irresistible to any sports fan. As for the Yankees, well, my Uncle Eddie loves them and has all his life. Need I say more?
Of all the teams to make the post season this year the only two I’d just as soon not see win are the Rangers and the Dodgers. Can’t say why. They just don’t do anything for me. So watch the two of them make the Series.
In which case my only response will be: Go Packers!
Of course, my son is a Cowboys fan, so …
