Sweet by any name

In a town somewhat noted for its nicknames, Sugar Sciandra just may be the best of them all.
It’s melodic alliteration alone makes it so. Sugar Sciandra (pronounced Shandra) is just plain lovely to say.
But what truly makes it spectacular is the person it represents. Charles “Sugar” Sciandra lived up to his name.
Sugar passed away January 6. He was 104 years old.
I’d known him, and his children Charlie and Madeline, most of my adult life but never heard the story behind his nickname. So I asked Charlie at his dad’s viewing Wednesday night at Graziano Funeral Home.
The explanation was not dramatic but yet perfect. Charlie said a girlfriend gave it to him when he was a young man. Perfect. What else would you call someone so sweet?
