Give yourself some credit

As you contemplate your New Year’s resolutions – and, yes, you can make resolutions on Jan. 9, or even July 9; there’s no deadline on committing to a new you – it is important to keep in mind this line from the song “Dance 10, Looks 3” from the Broadway musical “A Chorus Line”:

Keep the best of you,
Fix the rest of you

The point is, as the Pennsylvania Dutch say, “do not throw out the baby with the bath water.”
Meaning that before you start making a list of the things about you that can be better, make a list of the things about you that are already pretty darned good.
You might be surprised how long that list is.
Get a good handle on “the best of you” before planning how to fix “the rest of you.”
